Our Company
South Coast Designs, established in July 2020, was born out of the need to “make lemonade from lemons” and establish something positive from a difficult situation.
While Mignon’s academic background is in English and Graphic Design, and Megan studied Fine Art, their mutual love of animals led them both to finding their careers at Audubon Nature Institute. As an art director and interpretive designer, they found that they are perfectly matched as a design team. Working together for 6 years, they’ve collaborated on multiple projects for many audiences. They’ve worked with CEOs, managing directors, contractors, scientists, and event planners not to mention tourists of all ages. All of this in a high-humidity environment with hurricanes, flooding and unrelenting heat. When working with this variety of people and conditions, they learned to handle pressure, deadlines, and budget restrictions with grace and humor.
2020 arrived and handed out some lemons – a global pandemic and lay-offs. Like so many other people in the world, they found themselves unemployed. They knew they weren’t ready to give up their work relationship, so they decided to join forces and start South Coast Designs.
Their combined and individual experience includes designing everything from small projects like business cards and t-shirts to larger annual reports and sales promotions. Not only do they design print collateral, but from concept to completion they have helped to design and build entire exhibit spaces. They are not above getting their hands dirty. When deadlines are fast approaching, they will pick up paint brushes, sculpting tools or shovels to get the job done. With over 30 years of experience, and a network of resources, they are here to assist their clients in solving problems through beautiful and thoughtful design.
Our Thoughts
Good work takes time.
This is one of our core beliefs. Ideas need to be thought out and crafted to produce the desired results. Yes, we would love it if we could come up with an award-winning idea in the first 10 minutes; but it doesn’t usually happen that way.
God is in the details.
An old professor of mine used to say this to his class. While the larger picture is very important, all of the small details and nuances are what make projects shine. It is the joy of finding hidden surprises that people love, and remember.
Projects should be fun.
Let’s face it – all designers start with a love of drawing. As a kid we all spent hours drawing, painting or sculpting - because it was fun. At the center of this job is creating. When we work on a project, we have lively discussions about the work. And honestly, sometimes these conversations have nothing to do with the project. Sometimes the most ridiculous story, picture or words can trigger the best ideas. Sometimes, when you let yourself focus on a different action, the answer hits you in the face. So, yeah, we like to laugh and have fun, but it’s all part of our creative process.
Less is more – most of the time.
Customers don’t want and will not read 20 pages of copy forced into a 5 page booklet. Empty space is necessary for a viewer to comfortably read and absorb information.
Contrary to popular belief, we do believe in deadlines.
Creation is a process. But, we understand that your time is valuable and that delays can cost your company money, possible customers and frustration. We will do whatever is necessary to meet both your deadline and your budget for projects.
